The Mirror of God’s Word

For if you just listen and don’t obey, it is like looking at your face in a mirror but doing nothing to improve you appearance. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like.
James 1:23-24, NLT

Most of us will have looked in the mirror at least once in the last twenty four hours. Did what we saw cause us to take any particular action? – to comb, cut, trim, or shave; to apply make up, cream, or lotion? I expect the answer is yes.

Then why is it that, when we look at the Word of God, as James suggests, and see what we need to do in our lives, we choose to ignore what we see?

We miss out on God’s best for us by ignoring His truth and not applying it to our lives. It’s like having medication from the doctor and choosing to leave it on the shelf and not take it, and then wondering why it’s not doing us any good!

James encourages his readers earlier in that chapter to ‘Get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the message God has planted in your hearts, for it is strong enough to save your souls’ (James 1:21).

And later he says ‘But if you keep looking steadily into God’s perfect law – the law that sets you free- and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard then God will bless you for doing it’(James 1:25).

In these days, when there are so many distractions, we need to keep looking into the mirror of God’s Law, and work on what we see, so we can become more like His Son.
