This is what the Lord says: “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.”
Jeremiah 6:16, NIV

Where have we been, where are we now, and where are we going? Are we walking blindly into the future with the hope that everything will turn out right in the end? Do we have a faith in God that tells us we really trust Him at all times and in all circumstances? We all have our own history. We all have a past which is our springboard into the future. This is the foundation on which we have built our hopes and our dreams.

Our scripture for today reminds us to look for the ancient paths. These are the paths that have stood the test of time and will lead us safely on into our destiny. Perhaps we need to look back at the ways we have come, paths we have travelled in times past. We may have stumbled down blind alleys, been sidetracked or deviated from our intended route. Has the fire in our heart that once burned so brightly gone cold? Have we lost our first love and drifted away from the pathway of God?

Let’s look again for that ‘Highway of Holiness’, the designated way of God’s people, the path where God leads the way. ‘Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it”’ (Isaiah 30:21). We need to re-focus our eyes on God. He alone is our sure guide. Without Him we are lost. When Moses was called by God to lead His people into the promised land, Moses effectively said to Him; “If you don’t come with me I’m not going” (Exodus 33:15).

We may have deviated from God’s way and don’t know how to put it right. Are we standing at the crossroads looking for the ancient path? ‘A highway will be there; it will be called the Way of Holiness; it will be for those who walk on that Way’ (Isaiah 35:8). ‘Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need’ (Hebrews 4:16). He will give us hope and confidence to move forward. Jesus said, “I am the Way.” He will graciously guide us back on track, forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).

As we acknowledge His continued presence with us, let’s take His hand and walk with Him. Then we’ll realise He’s still walking with us. It is there we will find our true fellowship in Him. Let’s not be anxious about anything, but as we share our concerns with Him, the peace of God will fill our hearts and our minds. Jesus will once again be at the centre of our lives, our companion and comforter. Let’s look for the ancient paths, where the good way is, He will surely guide us along that well-trodden road, the road He Himself once walked, where we can travel His Way and find rest for our souls.

Prayer: Thank You, Lord, for Your comfort and the constant assurance that You are with me always. Please help me to walk safely on the path You have already prepared for me. I want to walk with You all the days of my life and know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ my Saviour and my Redeemer. As You walk with me, Lord, I know I am safe. Thank You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
