Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name, make known among the nations what he has done. Sing to him, sing praises to Him, tell of all his wonderful acts!
Psalm 10:1-2, NIV

There are places in God’s word where His people are called upon to be quiet before Him. The reason given for this is usually that we should reverently consider His greatness, and listen to what He has to say. It’s more important to listen to God, than to talk to Him.

But having listened to Him, we are encouraged to talk to each other and to the world around us. ‘Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your hearts to the Lord’ (Ephesians 5:19). Sometimes we may feel that we’ve got very little to say, and we’re not as skilled as others in saying it. Sure, there are always orators that can form their words beautifully and be eloquent and convincing. But do they really have something to say? There’s a difference between just putting words together or saying something important!

So much material is published and so much information is available. Most of it is forgotten in a matter of days or weeks. Can we make our testimony about our God heard under these circumstances? Don`t our words just drown in the general cacophony of sounds?

No! - Because there’s content in those words. They strike a cord in people’s hearts, and tell them about hope and truth. There’s a market for your testimony about God`s faithfulness and mighty deeds! Paul sometimes spoke with fear and trembling, not with powerful words, but the message got through. And it bore fruit. Lives were changed, societies made new and old habits broken. All because of some simple words by a fearful man.

It is the content that counts! So let the nations hear, let people listen! You´ve got something to tell, something to sing about: the mighty acts of the Lord!

In a big choir it may seem that a single voice isn´t very important, but it is, because the mighty sound of the choir is made up of all those single, seemingly unimportant voices. Together they make a whole concert hall vibrate with beautiful sound; together they get the message across to the audience. Very few have a solo part to sing, but the harmony of their voices, the unity in their words, is so powerful. And it is built up from all the many voices!

That’s how we can let the nations hear of our God. When all the individual voices, all the different testimonies, all the godly actions, are heard and seen, that’s a message which brings good tidings!

Today, your song while you’re at work, your words over a cup of tea or coffee, or your helping hand to a neighbour, can be one voice in the big choir that speaks to the nations about the greatness of our God! Let the earth hear your voice!
