Jesus welcomed the people, taught them about the Kingdom of God and healed those in need. Luke 9:11

Seeds of the Kingdom

Stars

by John Sainsbury

He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name.
Psalm 147:4, NIV

In 2021, the world population stood at something like 7.8 billion people and is rapidly heading towards 8 billion. That’s an awful lot of human beings in existence. So, with numbers like that, we might easily think that God wouldn’t notice us amongst all the others. Surely my little life is invisible to Him. But that’s not what the Bible tells us.

If we are wondering whether there is any evidence for God seeing us, then we need look no further than Psalm 147:4. We read there that God determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name.

When you stop to think about it, that really is totally mind-blowing. Nobody, except God, knows just how many stars there are. But scientists estimate that there are at least 200 sextillion, or 200 billion trillion, stars out there. That is way, way more than the number of human beings currently inhabiting this tiny (by cosmic standards) planet in this tiny, (by cosmic standards) galaxy in the truly ginormous space we call the universe.

Our lives are complicated and often painful and, especially when we are hurting, we may be tempted to think that God has no idea who we are. But that’s not what the Bible says. To quote another psalm: ‘all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be’ (Psalm 139:16).

In other words, He not only knows your name, but He knows everything there is to know about you. ‘And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered’ (Matthew 10:30).

So, if you are feeling small and insignificant today, please know that you are known and loved by God. The God who named the stars is watching over you too.
