Seeds of the Kingdom

Seated with Christ

by Jilly Lyon-Taylor

God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus.
Ephesians 2:6, NIV

When I travel by air I always ask for a window seat as I love to look out at the landscape below and see the houses, cars and trees seemingly in miniature. Even the mountains appear flat when high above them. That seems to me to be a picture of the perspective on life and its problems that God wants us to have. He has promised that when we are saved we are raised up to be seated with Christ in heavenly realms – “far above all rule and authority, power and dominion” (Ephesians 1:21). That means we should be able to look down at obstacles from His perspective, from our position in Him.

I had a revelation of this when one of our sons started at secondary school. He was struggling after the first day, finding everything quite daunting, so after I had left him on the second day I launched into prayer for him as mothers do! I started to pray that he would make a friend, that he wouldn’t get lost and that he would manage the work. Then I heard a voice very clearly telling me to “Stop!” I knew it was the Lord.

He told me to stop praying for the circumstances in my son’s life to change and to pray instead that he would be above the circumstances, knowing who he was in Christ. I started to pray in this way and when I met him at the end of the day there was complete transformation. His day had gone well and he was seeing everything from a different perspective.

What about you today? Are you seeing obstacles towering above you, or are you looking down at them from the perspective of who and where you are in Christ?

Prayer: Lord, thank You that You have raised me up with Christ and seated me with Him in heavenly places. Help me to remember this today so that I can see everything from Your perspective, remembering who I am in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
