Rights and Wrongs in the Family

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
Ephesians 6:1, NASB

Last November, the United Nations Committee on Human Rights, meeting in Geneva, made a decision to formally exclude the unborn child from the Right to Life in the UN charter. Nothing demonstrates more clearly the foolishness of a justice system based on competing rights, as opposed to God’s system based on acknowledging sin. The committee’s decision simply brings into stark focus the clearly opposing rights of the foetus and the mother.

Another UN Committee on the Rights of the Child recently wrote a report which contained 150 recommendations on where Britain could be contravening the UN’s charter, including the right of children to receive confidential counselling and sexuality education without the need for parental or legal guardian consent.

The unchanging word and wisdom of God says that the wellbeing of mankind is secured when sin is addressed, whether this is in the life of a child or an adult. The ever-changing wisdom of man currently says that such wellbeing in the family is only achieved through declaring and enforcing the individual rights of parents and children.

This opinion-based morality of secular humanism in the world is increasingly dividing children from their parents. Thank God that His written and living Word draws families together by making it possible to deal with the sin that divides, and we are given a precious opportunity to find healing for the mistakes of the past.

Prayer: Father God, Your ways are right for every human being, not least within Your amazing design for family. I choose Lord to be more willing to confess my certain sin than to claim my so-called rights. Amen.
