Our Rock of Refuge

by Joan Rono

God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, even though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though its waters roar and be troubled, Though the mountains shake with its swelling.
Psalms 46:1-3, NKJV

We are in a season of change in governments, and when you turn on the media there’s a lot happening, and a lot of fear and uncertainty.

On my recent holidays, I had the privilege of hiking in the mountains on the Isle of Skye. When I went home, I had a question in my mind. Do mountains move? I had to find out, and so I looked it up online. I was amazed to see that, actually, yes! Mountains move. The huge, lofty mountains shift slowly, but they do move.

God used that moment to reassure me of His unchangeable nature. In my spirit I heard “The mountains may move, but the Lord God never changes”. I believe He was speaking to me. And I believe He’s not just speaking to me, but to many who are worried and uncertain about the different things happening in the world! Political changes, terrorists’ attacks, fear, and unusual deaths fill the news we hear day after day. Everything seems to be moving and shifting, except one thing, the Sovereignty of God. That’s the only thing which remains standing.

Over and over the psalms of David assure us that, if we trust in the faithfulness of God, we’ll have nothing to fear. I recommend reading the whole of Psalm 46, and here are two other verses which are helpful: ‘A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand; but it shall not come near you’ (Psalm 91:7); and ‘Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abides forever’ (Psalms 125:1).

If God is the same all the time, we can stand on His faithfulness. We can look to Him when everything’s moving and shifting. We can anchor on Him in the stormy seas, and be assured that His strength will support us, and, because His nature is everlasting, we can do this for eternity.

I hope you will lift your eyes to Him and know His strength.

Prayer: Lord, I lift my eyes to You, and believe that You’re there to strengthen and uphold me, and that Your right hand will guide me, even in the storm. I pray You’ll help me in my unbelief, and, even in my fears, I’ll call on You. I know I can trust in Your faithfulness in uncertain times. Thank You, Lord. Amen.
