Our Great Inheritance

In His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade.
1 Peter 1:3-4, NIV

My mother died recently, but before she went she told each of us about the things she wanted us to have from her belongings. These things were earmarked for us, and her hope was that we would use them and enjoy the inheritance she had left for us.

These verses in Peter’s letter tell us that in a similar way, once we are adopted into His family, God promises each of us an inheritance. Unlike earthly goods, this inheritance can never perish, spoil or fade. It’s not vulnerable to fire, theft or fluctuating financial markets! But just as I had to claim and collect the items left to me by my mother, we each need to come to God to receive what He has promised us, and we need to use and enjoy the benefits of each aspect.

Our inheritance in Him includes eternal life, forgiveness of sin, abundant life now, health, healing, provision, security, unconditional love and acceptance, and so much more, but most of us are not living in the benefit of all that has been promised.

Romans 8:17 tells us that as God’s children we are “heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ.” The fullness of our inheritance may not be manifest until we go to be with the Lord, but as heirs of the King of Kings we should be living extra-ordinary lives now in the knowledge of who our Father is and what He has promised us! Are we? Why not come to Him today and start to live in more of the benefits of your inheritance now?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You that as Your child You have promised me an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. Forgive me for ignoring aspects of my inheritance. Please help me to live in the benefit of all that You have promised me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
