Our Fortress is Our God

Have you ever felt totally overwhelmed and surrounded by challenges and difficulties on all sides? I have, and so has King David in the Old Testament. His life was anything but problem free, yet in the midst of it all, he stood strong, because he knew his God. It wasn’t a vague, superficial knowing either, but rather a deep, intimate knowledge that carried him through many sorrows and life challenges. Not only did God protect David from his enemies, but also He enlarged the path under his feet, so that his foot didn’t slip (2 Samuel 22:37), and brought him out into a broad place (2 Samuel 22:20). God was King David’s support throughout his life time, and together, hand in hand, they overcame all that came against him (2 Samuel 22:19). The Bible tells us that God doesn’t change and that there’s no variation or shadow of turning with Him (James 1:17). Therefore, the same God that King David knew, we can also experientially know. He’s also our God!

I love the proclamations of David in today’s verses. He proudly declared that his strength and power came directly from his God, who’d set his feet on high places. Not only that, though. God also taught David’s hands to fight and made him great (2 Samuel 22:36). I encourage you to read the entire chapter (2 Samuel:22) and write down all the words that King David used to describe our God. Ponder on the words he used; words like fortress, deliverer, strong tower and shield. David needed God to be all of these things and he wasn’t disappointed. Not only did David cry out to God in his distress, but those cries reached God’s ears and God responded by delivering David, His beloved son. You’re just as precious and loved by God as King David was, so how about turning your concerns into prayers and running into the presence of our God. Jesus Christ opened the way for you to come, and, like David, you won’t be disappointed.

Prayer: God, You’re my Saviour, my rock, my fortress, my deliverer, my stronghold, my refuge and my place of safety. You’re bigger than anything that comes against me and rages within me. I’ll call upon Your holy name. I’ll trust in You, like King David did. I’ll worship at Your footstool. You’re more than worthy of my allegiance. Amen.
