Jesus welcomed the people, taught them about the Kingdom of God and healed those in need. Luke 9:11

My Body or His Body

by David Cross

Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20, NASB

My present body is on a life-time lease from the Maker. He has asked me to take care of it, according His instructions, to welcome Him there and to fulfil the earthly destiny that He has set before me. Thankfully, if it gets damaged by the storms of life or my bad choices, He is pleased to help with the repair of His property.

How different this is from the attitude of the world today. Amnesty International presented a manifesto in March 2015 entitled My Body, My Rights. Although the supposed purpose was to challenge discrimination and criminalisation of vulnerable people, the start of the manifesto strongly declared that everyone should have an absolute right to consensual sex with any other person, and also a right to unrestricted access to abortion.

If the sovereignty and ownership over our bodies lie simply with ourselves, then why would we not claim all the body rights we can? However, if the Bible is indeed true, both sovereignty and ownership lie with God, He must be very saddened to see such a manifesto, which will inevitably lead to spiritual, mental and physical disorder in the lives of countless individuals. Thank God that He is willing, at any time, to be given back ownership and, through Jesus Christ, to repair the damage that our hijacking of His property has caused.

Prayer: Father, thank You for the bodies You have given us. Through the sinfulness of humankind, much damage has been caused, but clearly You still love us and desire restoration of all that You have created. Help each one of us to truly glorify You in our bodies, in Jesus’ name.
