The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, Because the Lord has anointed Me, To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the broken hearted, And the opening of the prison to those who are bound; To comfort all who mourn, To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they may be called trees of righteousness, The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.
Isaiah 61:1–3, NKJ

I have just watched a film called ‘Lorenzo’s Oil’. It’s about a young boy who had quite a rare and painful terminal disease. His parents spent many months researching a cure and eventually discovered a substance that could be extracted from olive oil that, when added to his diet, brought healing. From a weak and critical state, he grew strong and well, along with many other children suffering from the disease. This film was based on a true story.

Isaiah talks about the oil of joy. Jesus quoted the above verses in Luke 4:18, saying that these verses were being fulfilled that very day. (And every eye was upon Him knowing what He was claiming). Jesus was the Anointed One and He is the One that brings healing to the brokenhearted with the oil of joy. How many people are dying on the inside with the grief they carry, where there has been some loss, rejection or trauma in their lives, with pain that they can’t even express. And yet some have discovered this ‘oil of joy’, Jesus, the only one who can bring release and healing from the heartache they carry. Jesus holds the key that can bring real freedom.

Scripture says God weeps when He sees His children hurting. He longs to give them the special oil of His Spirit. The oil that Lorenzo’s parents discovered brought life and hope to hundreds of children. Jesus brings life, hope and healing to all who will receive Him.

He anoints my head with oil, my cup runs over (Psalm 23:5).

Prayer: Lord, I pray for those, who I may meet, who carry great heartaches and pain. Give me the love and wisdom to help them find hope at last and complete freedom and restoration in You. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
