Jesus welcomed the people, taught them about the Kingdom of God and healed those in need. Luke 9:11

Seeds of the Kingdom

Just Enough for Today

by Patricia Lake

For this is what the Lord the God of Israel says: “The jug of flour will not be used up, and the jug of oil will not run dry, until the day that the Lord sends rain upon the land”.
1 Kings 17:14, NIVUK

God always comes through, even though it’s often at the last minute to test our faith, and to teach us invaluable lessons we can learn no other way.

Elijah was sent to a widow outside of Israel for help, and He obeyed God immediately, although it must have seemed out of the ordinary, yet again. He had already experienced God’s faithfulness in unusual ways, having been sustained completely by God’s miraculous provision by the brook Cherith. As always, God had gone ahead and prepared the way.

It was a time of famine, and the widow was preparing what she thought was her last meal for herself and her son. Despite her circumstances, however, she hosted the prophet by faith and believed God’s word. “This is what the Lord the God of Israel says: “The jar of flour will not be used up, and the jug of oil will not run dry, until the day that the Lord sends rain upon the land”.  Obedience to God’s word meant she was blessed immeasurably, and as she received Elijah as a prophet, she received a prophet’s reward. God honoured her.

She had heard about the God of Israel, but now she was about to enter a new dimension. Learning to live in God’s miraculous provision would change her life forever. As each mealtime approached, she must have looked in amazement as the realisation dawned on her that the levels had not reduced as the days rolled by. Mealtime had taken on a whole new meaning and an unexpected excitement. The wonderful thing about God is that, once you have experienced His faithfulness, it makes it easier next time around to trust Him.

When the promise of God was fulfilled, life moved on, but she had learned an invaluable lesson. When her next trial presented itself, although it was of a very different kind, she immediately went to the prophet, for she knew that God was her source.

The word of God does not promise easy times. On the contrary, Jesus said, “In the world you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).

If there’s one thing we can be sure of it’s that God is faithful, and no matter what the difficulty, He always has the perfect answer.
