How Cute!

by Andy Taylor

How great is our Lord! His power is absolute! His understanding is beyond comprehension!
Psalm 147:5, NLT

Recently, on a break during one of our courses here at Ellel USA, I phoned home. My five-year-old son, Isaac, answered the phone and so I asked him what he was doing. He replied, ‘Oh, I’m just sat here relaxing’. It took all my energy not to crack up laughing at this ‘grown up’ comment coming out of the mouth of such a little kid – it was very cute! As Isaac’s dad, I also felt a deep sense of love for this child of mine and, after hanging up, I proceeded to tell those on the course about this funny conversation.

It made me think about how we never see ourselves as being young in our thinking. When we are children we think we understand everything perfectly and we have all kinds of beliefs and opinions about the world around us – firmly believing that we have it all sorted out. As adults we do the same even though in God’s eyes, we are still His children.

I wondered if there were times when God hears our comments and turns to His angels saying, ‘Did you hear that? How cute!’ I wondered if, when we share about our impression of Him or His ways, He is overwhelmed with love for this little child of His who thinks they understand it all but just understand a fraction of the fullness of His ways.

It reminded me that God is our Father and that His primary love for us is that of a Father to a child. Remember today that God doesn’t expect you to know everything about everything – we have Him to rely on for understanding. He just wants us to remain in Him and to trust that He has it all under control.
