But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
Matthew 10:30, NKJV

This verse fascinates me. Could God really be interested in the hairs on my head? I’m reminded of the verse every morning when I brush my hair and a few silver strands float on to my clothes or fall to the ground. Does He really have my hairs numbered? The original Greek word for ‘numbered’ is the root from which we get our English word arithmetic. It means ‘counted’ but it also has an understanding that each number is important and has its own identity. Numbers require comprehension of what they mean, as anyone who struggled with maths at school will know well.

Like many of the things Jesus said this statement is a picture parable. A profound truth expressed in just a few words. It’s a parable of God’s care and attention to every detail of our lives. His interests are beyond our comprehension. Whether extremely small or enormously large, nothing is outside His knowledge and understanding.

The prophet Zechariah tells us He ‘stretches out the heavens’ (Zechariah 12:1) and the Psalmist tells us ‘He counts the number of the stars; He calls them all by name’ (Psalm 147:4). The Hebrew words imply God has enumerated the stars and defined their exact position. He knows about the farthest reaches of the cosmos but He also knows about the smallest microscopic plankton, that we can only see with the help of a microscope. ‘Let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures’ (Genesis 1:20).

You may not be very concerned about how many hairs are on your head but Your Heavenly Father is. Every hair matters because it indicates that you matter in every aspect of your life and well being.

Whether you have a full head of hair or are completely bald, what Father God wants you to know today is that He cares about you in every detail of your life.

Prayer: Father, it’s hard to grasp the fact that things about me that I may not think are important, or that I may be unaware of, are still of great interest to you. Thank You for Your attention to the detail of my life which shows Your great love for me. Amen.
