God’s Saving Grace

by Annalene Holtzhausen

And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace [Who imparts all blessing and favour ], Who has called you to His [own] eternal glory in Christ Jesus, will Himself complete and make you what you ought to be, establish and ground you securely, and strengthen, and settle you.
1 Peter 5:10, AMP

Recently I came upon the following explanation of God’s grace.
1. A state of sanctification by God; the free and unmerited favour or beneficence of God; saving grace.
2. A disposition to be generous or helpful; goodwill, mercy.
3. A favour rendered by one who need not do so.

We all know that God’s grace is something we don’t deserve or earn, but do we really understand the depth of His grace until we get to a place of desolation? To that place where we look at our own sinfulness and weakness - like looking into a mirror - and we don’t like what we’re seeing? It’s in this place where we battle to bridge the gap between our own frail humanity and God’s perfect love and acceptance. Our question is ‘How am I worth so much in the Lord if I’m so sinful?’

It’s in this moment that our loving Father stoops down and meets us where we are. We sometimes beat ourselves up about hurts or offences we inflicted, in moments when we reacted, without allowing for the Holy Spirit’s guidance first. Even if we have asked for forgiveness, we might still battle with guilt and condemnation, and can’t accept God’s love, (because we don’t feel that we deserve it). But He has such understanding and compassion for the situations we find ourselves in - more than we will ever realise! He comes in love and lifts us out of our battle. He gives us the strength to move on.

It’s God’s grace that bridges the gap between our humanity and receiving His perfect love. Without grace, we can’t be saved. As long as we keep yearning for His revelation in our battles, He will save us by His grace. He won’t leave us in our place of loneliness, desolation and confusion. So I want to encourage you today not to give up – don’t turn away from the Lord and don’t lose heart. His power works best in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9) and He will guide us through every struggle and every battle.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I honour You today for Your faithfulness in my life. Thank You that You know my every thought and all that happens to me. You are my victory in every situation and You will never leave me, nor forsake me. Your grace is sufficient for me. Amen.
