Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Hebrews 11:1, KJV

I am sure we have all hoped for things in our lives, maybe that promotion at work, that a hard relationship would become easier, healing for a loved one. Sometimes, though, you do not get the promotion, that hard relationship remains the same, or your loved one passes away. Your situation remains the same and you are disappointed. But God also remains the same. He remains our loving Father who wants the best for us.

Not only does He want the best, but He knows what the best for us is. We only see such a short way ahead in our lives, the few steps immediately ahead of us. But God knows what is around the corner, or over the brow of the next hill. There is nothing in our lives He does not know about.

I love the KJV of today’s verse because of the use of the words, ‘substance’ and ‘evidence’. They sound so solid and dependable. They are describing what faith is, but, I believe, also whom we have faith in. The ‘substance’ of our God is strong and trustworthy. I have ‘evidence’ of His loving kindness in my life, and I hope you do too. Having faith in God is having faith in His character and constancy. That involves getting to know and love Him in every season and situation. For me it is just as much about seeing and valuing where God has strengthened our faith through tough times, as well as when He has given us what we hoped for.

But what if life has already brought disappointment? What can we do then? I believe we can transfer our hope from what we had hoped for, to the one who knows what is best for us. Put your hope in Jesus. You will be safe with Him. Whatever you are hoping for, be encouraged. God has the best plan for our lives as He sees what we don’t. God can see round corners.

Prayer: Father God, give us the faith to hope in Your loving kindness, and may our lives be filled with the evidence of Your goodness. Let our lives be a testimony to who You are. Amen.
