But those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles
Isaiah 40:31, NKJV

The sight of an eagle flying is an awesome sight indeed. Not purely due to the size of these magnificent birds, but also because of the ease and confidence with which they fly. A master of the sky, the eagle uses the air currents to cover miles of ground with minimal effort. A small movement of its wingtips every now and again is all it takes for the eagle to continue it’s soaring.

This verse tells us that to ‘fly’ with this ease we need to wait on the Lord. When I consider the word, ‘wait’, I think of two things. The first is patience; waiting for something to happen. Even if we know it is going to happen we need to wait patiently and trust that it will come to pass at the right time.

The second is serving; similar to a waiter serving at a table. As a waiter you would only bring what the person you were serving ordered, not something else entirely, even if you consider it a better meal.

We can be impatient, or even unhappy, with waiting for God to bring something to pass, leading to us trying to make it happen sooner. The outcome may be the same, but it could eventually take a lot longer or the outcome could even result in failure. God’s ways are very different from our ways, but they are always better! We can also work at doing things that God hasn’t even asked us to do, whilst ignoring the things that He originally asked of us!

Both of these cause unnecessary work, similar to an eagle flying underneath the strong air currents that could support it enough to allow it to soar. The eagle would have to work hard, wouldn’t ever move very far and would tire very quickly. In reality, an eagle living in those conditions wouldn’t survive. And we tire very quickly when we are not doing the things God has made us for!

For those of us who want to move forward in rest and peace, we need to listen to God, trust His timing and only do what He asks of us. Let us wait on the Lord and enjoy flying high like an eagle, for that is a place of rest and fulfilment.
