Fighting Shadows

by Tanya Person

For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.
Ephesians 6:12, NLT

One evening I was in my room when suddenly I saw a large black shadow. It really startled me! I looked up to see what large thing was casting the shadow in my room. I had to laugh when I saw it was a tiny fly on the light. It occurred to me how easily our imagination can take over and make things seem much bigger than they actually are.

This has a parallel in the spiritual realm. Many times, we see something, and we can be afraid, and we can either run away or we can fight, but often our enemy pretends to be much bigger than he really is. We can see in 1 John 4:4 that ‘the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world.’

I want to encourage you today, as it says in our main verse for today, whatever you are facing, remember that other people are not your enemy. Our enemy is made up of evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, mighty powers in this dark world, and evil spirits in the heavenly places. Put on the armour of God (Ephesians 6:11-17), and don’t let the enemy pretend to be bigger than he is. Remember that Jesus in you is much bigger than all that you may face.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You that You are bigger than everything I may face today. Please shine Your light and let me see the enemy as he really is, and help me to defeat him in Your strength. Amen.
