Essential Irrigation

by David Cross

Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life.
Proverbs 4:23, NAS

The human spirit is the wellspring through which God irrigates the thirsty land of our lives. The water of the Holy Spirit flows out of this deep place bringing eternal life to barren soil, from the moment that we come to Jesus and ask Him to meet our thirst.

Water from this precious spring needs open watercourses to flow into the ground of our soul and physical body. As we first open ourselves to Jesus, the start of this powerful flow down the main channels can make a dramatic difference to lifeless ground, bringing immediate understanding, change and colour to our lives. The Bible calls this the baptism in the Holy Spirit.

I was recently watching a natural history television programme and saw the amazing effects of water from distant mountains flooding into the arid plains of the Masai Mara national reserve in Kenya. Everything burst into life and activity in an amazingly short time. But some places never got the full flow of water and it wasn’t long before the dry season returned and took its toll on plants and animals.

In John 4:13 Jesus promises that once we ask Him to provide spiritual water there will be no limit to the supply – Whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst. The spring will not go dry.

However, the condition of the irrigation channels can be a problem. Blockages such as fear, pride and unbelief can leave parts of our lives dry, unproductive and in enemy hands. When the Holy Spirit meets any such resistance He’s willing to show us the truth of the situation so we can agree with Him what needs changing. He won’t force a way through the blockages. He waits for us to surrender further ground to the Lordship of Jesus. He waits for us to receive His living water.

Prayer: Father, You know where the water of the Holy Spirit has yet to flow fully in my life. I’m ready to hear the truth about these dry places and to respond to the commands of Jesus for clearing the blocked channels. I welcome You, Holy Spirit, to bring truth and life. Amen.
