Enoch walked with God

by Jill Southern

Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.
Genesis 5:24, NIV

What does it mean to walk with God? Firstly, we have to be at peace with God and completely reconciled with Him. Amos 3:3 says, ‘Do two walk together unless they have agreed to do so?’ It means to live a life in a very close communion with God, for God to share His heart with us and to walk together with Him.

Enoch did not walk before God, he did not walk after God, but WITH God as if he was in heaven already. He did not live as the rest of mankind, so he did not die as the rest of mankind. God took him away. It is further explained in Hebrew 11:5 ‘By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death: he could not be found, because God had taken him away’. Enoch pleased God and was translated. Whenever a believer dies God comes and fetches them and takes them to glory. In Psalm 116:15 it says, ‘Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints’.

Whilst Enoch walked with God, Abraham is said to be a friend of God and David to be a man after God’s heart. But I believe God wants to say something about choosing to walk WITH God.

Enoch pleased God. When we live to please Him, God takes us from this life into eternity. It will be a happy event for both us and God. If we walk with God, we fully belong to Him. We walk side by side. We practice the presence of God. We listen to His voice and become one in heart and vision with Him. We know God and enjoy Him. We believe in God, and we love Him. We have complete faith in Him. Then we start to become conformed into the image of His Son.

Prayer: Father God, give me a deep desire to walk with You; not to race ahead of You nor to lag behind You. Give me a hunger and thirst to be like Enoch and walk with You as my God. Then, at my life’s end, take me into eternity to be with You forever. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
