Divine Purpose

(Jesus answered) “This happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him”
John 9:3b, NIV

During His time on earth, Jesus healed many people in many different ways, and in this particular passage Jesus made it clear that this man was born blind, not because of either generational sin or his own sin, but that the ‘works of God might be displayed in him’. Unusually, He made clay by spitting on the ground and anointing the blind man’s eyes with the clay. When the man was then obedient to Jesus’ instruction to wash in the pool of Siloam, he immediately received his sight.

What was a moment of great joy and wonder for the man, as he beheld the face of Jesus his creator and healer, and the wonders of creation for the first time, was quickly interfered with by the enemy of our souls, whose aim was to detract from giving God the glory by stirring up the crowd to use the man’s healing to attack Jesus.

In John 10:10 Jesus declares, “The thief comes not, but to steal, kill and destroy, but I am come that they might have life and that they might have it more abundantly”. With the man’s co-operation, Jesus had opened the door of healing for him. Not only did he receive the enrichment and wonders of life when his natural sight was restored, but he received abundant life when his spiritual eyes were opened, as later on in the chapter the man worshipped Jesus, when he realised who He was (verse 38). What a wonderful day in the life of that man! No matter the controversies surrounding his healing, this man would never be the same, for he had transferred, in every sense of the word, from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of light.

Today Jesus is passing by your way and sees you. He is fully aware of your situation and desires to glorify God through you. Don’t be moved away by the distractions of the enemy, on social media or otherwise. This is a moment of destiny. It’s a personal appointment between you and your Maker. It is unique to you. New levels of endless unexpected possibilities await all those who are obedient to and walk with the King of kings and Lord of lords.
