Cling to Him

Choose to love the Lord your God and to obey him and cling to him, for he is your life and the length of your days. You will then be able to live safely in the land the Lord promised your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
Deuteronomy 30:20, LB

If we really choose life, we will choose to love the Lord, to obey His voice and to cling to Him, then we will live safely in that ‘promised land’ (Kingdom of God). ‘For Abraham waited for a city, which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God’ (Hebrews 11:10). He could foresee the ‘spiritual home’ that God promised.

Psalm 91:1 says ‘He who dwells in the Secret Place of the Most High shall abide under the Shadow of the Almighty’. This is where we need to live if we are to cling to Him. This is where we will find protection on the outside and peace on the inside. It comes to those who live in the shelter of the Most High. It seems to me that some live in the world and visit ‘the Secret Place’, while others live in ‘the Secret Place’ and visit the world.

But if our minds are steadfast we’ll experience God’s peace; ‘You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you’ (Isaiah 26:3), and the Hebrew word for ‘steadfast’ means those who cling to God.

Jesus is ‘the Shelter of the Most High God’, the place where protection, peace and forgiveness are found. We must live in Him. We can do this by spending time in His Word every day. It will make us strong. We can also do this by living close to Him in prayer, telling Him about everything and thanking Him for everything. When we wake and when we sleep we can let our thoughts turn towards Him. And if we’re living in ‘the Secret Place’, we’ll be interested in what’s on God’s heart. We’ll have a passion for what He’s concerned about. And I believe His greatest passion is for the salvation of the people He created.

We can cling to Jesus with all our being, make our dwelling place in God, know His peace and protection and share in His passionate love for all people.

Prayer: Lord, may we learn to cling to You, whatever our circumstances. May we learn to live in Your shelter even in the hardest times, and to deeply trust You. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
