And Jesus entered the temple and drove out all those who were buying and selling in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who were selling doves.
Matthew 21:12, NIV

This extraordinary and dynamic action of Jesus was far more than just an angry response to injustice and inappropriate use of the temple. When Jesus overturned the tables and seats, He was removing the spiritual platform which these traders had given to the powers of darkness, allowing defilement of His Father’s house.

In the gospel of John, Jesus pointedly calls the devil a thief, and it was clear to Him, this day in the temple, that both financial and spiritual robbery was taking place, even in God’s house. He felt compelled to act, so He removed the physical, and therefore spiritual, position which had been established by those trading. Jesus then explained His actions by quoting Old Testament Scripture, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer, but you are making it a robber’s den’ (Isaiah 56:7 and Jeremiah 7:11).

In our own home, we can also drive out any spiritual thieves, by repenting of the platforms that we have allowed the enemy to have there, through any sinful activity by ourselves or other occupants. In receiving God’s forgiveness, we can then tell the powers of darkness to leave, and so bring spiritual cleansing and peace to our place of dwelling, similar to the principle that Jesus demonstrated to His disciples in the temple in Jerusalem.

Prayer: Father, show me how to overturn the tables of any enemy activity in my own home. I’m so sorry if there has been carelessness, on my part, in keeping it clean for the well-being of all those residing there. Amen.
