Be still and know that I am God.
Psalm 46:10, NKJV

Even if the worst things in the earth are all happening, God is our refuge and Strength. He’s a very present help in trouble. Therefore we won’t fear. ‘Even if the world blows up – Even if the mountains crumble into the sea – Though the seas roar and foam, and the mountains shake’ we won’t fear (Psalm 46 2-3, NLT).

God says: “Stop. Shut everything else out. Be very still and know, deep in your spirit, that I’m God. I’m the Sovereign Lord. There’s a River whose streams make glad the city of God. There’s a river that flows from My presence, into the deepest parts of your spirit - the river of the Holy Spirit. The Kingdom of God is in you, and you’re in the Kingdom, therefore you won’t fear, even if the world blows up. I’m your anchor in the storm. Therefore you’ll know, that you know, that you know that I’m God”.

Psalm 46 is sung over many a saint at crisis point and has vital truth and meaning.
Hang on to His Presence in your trouble, hang on to this promise that He’s a ‘present’ help in your personal trouble. Like Stephen, when he was being stoned, look into the face of Jesus and know you’re held secure, for He cannot be moved. Be still and know that you can safely leave your trouble in His hands, even though the answer seems impossible to you. He’s Sovereign God.

Sometimes it’s very difficult to be still. There’s always something that has to be done or said to someone. Is there a small space of time in our day when we can actually be still, and know in our spirit that His presence is with us; His face is shining on us?

This is why we can "Be still and know" – because our God, in Christ, came into this world and defeated evil, death and sin, on the cross. Wherever there’s suffering He feels and knows about it, and He took it on His heart. Because He’s Alpha and Omega, and knows the end from the beginning, He says of us, ‘God will wipe away every tear from their eyes, there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, or crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things will pass away’. (Revelation 21:4).

This is the comfort of the Gospel for all who believe and the reason why we can ‘Be still and know that He is God’ when deep trouble is on our doorstep.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You for Your great provision for mankind. Help me to know You more through Your Holy Spirit. As I receive Your peace, let this heart know a fresh revelation of Your steadfast love. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
