Accidents

by Gemma Gardner

We know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.
Romans 8:28, NLT

Accidents! We all have them at different times in our lives, and they are always unexpected and can cause anything from mild irritation to acute pain and distress.  I had one a few days ago. I was out shopping and went into our local farm shop to buy a few items of fruit and vegetables. When I couldn’t find the small cucumbers, I asked the shop assistant if he had any. He said he did and went to get them.

He came back carrying a box of them and held it out for me to choose one. I picked one and put it into the shop basket I was holding and then, somehow, I overbalanced and fell backwards into a box of plums. I felt them squash under my weight, and my shorts were wet. There were plums rolling around in all directions and juice squirting out over the floor.

I was really upset and embarrassed about all the mess. But the shopkeeper told me not to worry, and he went to get some paper towel to mop up the floor. I wiped my shorts with a tissue and felt relieved that they were navy blue, so hopefully the red juice wouldn’t look too visible.

I can laugh about it now, but at the time it was embarrassing and upsetting. I haven’t been back to the shop yet, but when I do, I will be very vigilant, as they have a lot of boxes around.

Some accidents are not a laughing matter. Maybe you have had one some time ago, and you are still suffering the effects of it. Perhaps it was a fall, or a car accident. Perhaps the wounds have all healed up, but you are still getting pain from what happened. The good news is that the Lord was right with you when it happened, and He is able to heal you from all the shock and trauma of what happened.

Some people have even received physical healing from life-changing accidents. But even if that doesn’t happen, we can still come to the Lord and talk to Him about all that happened. We can share with Him the pain we felt, and maybe still are feeling, and He can heal all the distress and shock we experienced. He can even bring good out of what we have been through. We don’t always understand why things happen as they do, but the Lord wants to comfort us with His love, just as a mother comforts her child when they are hurting. I pray you will know His comforting arms around you today.
