Seeds of the Kingdom

Absolute Truth

by Peter Brokaar

“You are a king then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this reason I came into the world, to testify of the truth. Everyone on this side of the truth listens to Me”. “What is truth?” Pilate asked. With this he went out again to the Jews and said “I find no basis for a charge against Him”.
John 18:37-38, NIV

Pilate asked ‘What is truth’? - A question which we probably all have asked at some point in our lives. The Bible is very straightforward in answering this question. “I am the truth” Jesus said,’ (John 14:6). In Psalm 119:160 it says ‘All Your words are true’ and in verse 89 ‘Your word, O Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens’. Ultimately, all truth is in Jesus, and the Bible gives us assurance that whatever God says is true. When we realise that we can trust God for the truth. We need look no further.

One of my all-time favorite quotes is a saying attributed to Archimedes: ‘Give me a place to stand on, and I will move the earth!’ From a mathematical point of view this could be true, providing Archimedes also had a very lengthy lever at his disposal. But it speaks to me about the importance of having a firm place to put our feet on, the importance of possessing a foundation of truth from which we can live our lives.

But I believe we will never find truth if we only have ourselves, that is our own intellect, as a starting point. We may try as hard as we can to make sense of the world around us from the information we can gather - but we’ll always fail to reach the truth. What we need is a place to stand on outside of ourselves. We need to know there is an absolute truth. We need to know that there is something that will always remain true, whether we like it or not, believe it or not, even whether we ourselves are around or not. God, in His kindness to us, has provided that foundation of absolute truth for us. He sent His Son and He gave us His Word.

I would think it’s fair to say that somewhere in the last century the question ‘What is truth?’ has for the most part been replaced by another one. Society is no longer asking what the truth is, but now asks: ‘Does absolute truth exist?’ Jesus claimed there is absolute truth, and what’s more, that He is The Truth. Let’s make sure that we, as Christians, remain faithful, and continue to proclaim that there is an absolute truth, and that it is to be found in Jesus Christ, and in Him alone. We might be unpopular, but we will be able to ‘build our house on a rock’ instead of on ‘sandy land’. As a result the Lord Himself will call us wise (Matthew 7:24-27). And after all, who wouldn’t want that?

Prayer: Thank You, Father in heaven, for giving us Your truth and for giving us a foundation for our lives. Please help us to take our stand when it comes to proclaiming Your truth into this world, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
