Absolute Truth

by David Cross

The sum of Your word is truth.
Psalm 119:160a, NASB

What a long Psalm this is! But it contains some real gems, as in the content of today’s text. These seven words remind us that, taken in its entirety, the Bible can be relied upon to be the defining statement of God’s truth.

It’s not fashionable these days to believe in the absolute truth of God’s word. The trend is towards relativism, meaning that all truth and morality exist in relation to a particular cultural viewpoint or historical context. So, my truth will not be the same as that of my forebears or those from a different nation. But without a certain and unchanging plumbline of truth, the world is in a dangerous place, subject to the opinions and arguments of a voluble and sometimes coercive minority. There can be serious consequences for those who dare to question a current direction of progressive ideology or political correctness.

Thankfully, God doesn’t alter His word to fit in with the latest public opinion! We can have confidence that the Bible, read under the direction of the Holy Spirit, gives us God`s unchanging truth, undefiled by the fickleness of fashion. Sadly, this belief will be seen by most people in the world as bigoted and not sufficiently inclusive of the countless lifestyles that people choose to adopt. But God’s truth is given to us for the wellbeing of humanity, not for its condemnation, and followers of Jesus should be prepared to express that truth with much grace but without apology.

Prayer: Father, what a comfort to know that there exists an absolute truth concerning You and Your relationship with the human lives that You have created. Your truth, Your justice and Your mercy remain steadfast irrespective of human assessment. Thank You. Amen.
