Draw Near

Come near to God and He will come near to you.
James 4:8, NIV

God wants to draw us nearer to Himself. He longs for us to establish a strong relationship with Him so that He may bless us. He wants us closer to Him so that we might be aware of His presence in our lives. “My soul finds rest in God alone” (Psalm 62:1).

God longs for us to open our hearts to Him so that we can respond to His overwhelming love for each one of us. He gave Himself to us through Jesus. His love is portrayed throughout the whole Bible, and He wants to be with us always. Does this slip over our heads unnoticed? We’ve heard it so many times before. But what are we doing about it?

Are we taking positive steps to come closer to Him? Because He longs for a stronger bond with each one of us. “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness” (Jeremiah 31:3). The question is how do we get near Him?

God is infinite and awesome. He has always existed; before life, before time, before anything, and Scripture urges us to come closer to Him. The Apostle Paul writes, “I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord” (Philippians 3:8). We are His beloved children, to whom He desires to give all things. He longs to share Himself with us, because we are His offspring; sons and daughters of Adam whom He lovingly created. That is why He is continually calling us to come closer.

How can we begin to approach this awesome God and know an intimate relationship with Him? We can’t see Him or touch Him, so what steps can we take to get closer to Him? His holiness is unapproachable. His righteousness is untouchable. His love is unfathomable. Yet there is a way.

We need to be still and give ourselves completely over to Him, along with our issues and problems, and give thanks for all the blessings we’ve received. We need to wait upon Him with a thankful heart, surround ourselves with His presence, and approach His throne of grace with confidence. “Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience” (Hebrews 10:22).

Rest in His love; the love that cost Him dearly. He is inviting us to receive it afresh, and to live in its compassion, power, and strength. Allow it to overwhelm us completely, a strong, warm, loving embrace from the King.

“Finally.. whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you” (Philippians 4:8).

That’s a promise.
