And the Angel of the LORD appeared to him, and said to him, 'The LORD is with you, you mighty man of valour!
Judges 6:12, NKJV

The Lord has deposited many gifts and abilities within us to help fulfil our destiny. However, we do not often recognise them, and therefore they remain dormant. In these cases, we need someone else to point them out to us. Other people’s recognition that we have value within ourselves is often enough to help us release that value and bless others.

This was the case of a seven-year-old boy who was failing in school. He was sent home with a letter addressed to his mother stating that the young boy’s intellectual capacity for learning was almost non-existent. However, when his mother read the letter out loud, she said: “Your son is a genius. This school is too small for him and does not have enough good teachers to train him. Please teach him yourself.” Because his mother believed in him, Thomas Edison went on to become one of the greatest inventors of his time, giving us the invention of the light bulb.

We can see the same results in the life of Gideon, one of the judges of Israel. When the Angel of the Lord appeared to him, he was hiding because of the oppression by the Midianites. However, despite Gideon's fear, the Angel called him a “mighty man of valour.” This encouragement enabled Gideon to achieve significant deliverance for Israel.

When King David was a young man looking after his father's sheep, nobody believed in him. His family kept him isolated in the fields. Yet, the Lord saw his potential and sent the prophet Samuel to anoint him as the future king of Israel. Scripture declares, ‘“Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered. “He is tending the sheep.” Samuel said, “Send for him.” Then the LORD said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one”’ (1 Samuel 16:11-12, NIV). After his ascension to the throne David became a great king who took Israel to a new level of prosperity and peace.

In my experience, having someone who believed in me made all the difference. As I reflected on this idea, I started to remember the individuals the Lord placed in my path at just the right moment to build me up. I focussed on two key people who stood by me when I was struggling. Their support helped me discover gifts within myself that I had not recognised before, empowering me to achieve things I had thought impossible.

Perhaps, like me, somebody believed in you when you needed it the most. However, the important thing to know is that God believes in you. You will achieve success in the measure that you seek Him and allow His healing power to work in your life.

God believes in you because He knows you thoroughly. He sees all that you truly are, and what you can become.
