Captain Of Our Salvation
by Philip Asselin
The phrase, “Captain of our salvation” is a really interesting one. The Greek word translated as "Captain" in the King James Version (KJV) is archēgos. It means more than just a military officer; it refers to a "pioneer," "trailblazer," "founder," or "initiator". It is someone who leads the way, allowing others to follow in their footsteps. Jesus is seen as that archēgos—the one who entered death, conquered it, and established a path to safety or glory for everyone else.
Allow me to put it in a way that is true to the context and is often used by biblical scholars to illustrate it. The archēgos is a designated sailor onboard a sinking ship which is breaking apart on the rocks and the whole crew are in deadly peril. He takes it upon himself to tie a rope around himself and dive into the water to swim for land. No-one else can do this.
Getting there he looks for the strongest tree he can find and ties the rope securely around himself to the tree. He then calls to all on the ship to hold fast to the rope of hope and follow his lead to use it to come safely ashore.
Jesus has tied Himself to the cross – the only safe and secure place to deliver us from death, and calls all those who will take heed to come.
Jesus didn’t need to do this. We don’t deserve saving. But such is His love for us He obeyed His Father and came to rescue us, regardless of the perils He knew he would face, and the thrashing His body would experience, as He navigated His way to land and tied Himself to the cross (tree).
He calls to everyone who will hear Him to come over the way He has made for their salvation. Is that person you? Have you declared Jesus to be the Captain of your salvation? If you have, then know in the deepest parts of your spirit that You are His for all eternity. Death holds no fear for the one who trusts in Jesus who conquered death and the grave.
