You Are Still Useful

“Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.”

I have recently been going through some health issues in relation to my disability, and I have had to accept that there are some things I’m no longer able to do. I felt quite down about it and was not very good at accepting it. As I sat talking to the Lord about how I was feeling and my frustrations, He gave me the above verse. At first, I was wondering what the Lord was trying to say to me. As I pondered, I realised that there was fear within me. The idea of letting things go does scare me. As I read the rest of Isaiah 41:10, I realised that I was feeling discouraged, worn out, and useless. The Lord spoke to me and simply said, “I’m not done with you yet! You are still useful”.

A bit later, I was reading through Philippians and the one thing that stood out was that Paul was literally in prison, and in chains. But guess what? He was still useful! How? Well, he was able to pray, to write encouraging letters, praise and worship God and be a witness to the other prisoners and the guards.

So even though we may feel bound up, as if we are in chains due to illness, disability or old age, God can, and will, still use us. I have heard stories of people who have been bed-bound, but achieved great things from their beds, and people with disabilities or illness who were limited, but have gone on to be such an encouragement to others.

Maybe you are struggling with illness, disability, or old age, but you can still do so much. How? You could send a text or email of encouragement or pray for people. Maybe you’re able to help financially. Or you may be able to just sit and listen to someone who needs to talk. Can I suggest you spend some time with the Lord and ask Him to show you what He would like you to do.

Again, I am reminded of Jeremiah 29:11, ‘For I know the plans I have for you says the Lord, plans to give you hope and a future!’ No matter what your physical limitations are, He has a plan for you.
