The Need to Tune In

So we have not stopped praying for you since we first heard about you. We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding.

When we moved house two years ago, we had a new TV loft aerial installed. The installer checked everything, and I confirmed it was working well and that I was receiving all the free TV channels possible. Not long after that we embarked on some building work which involved removing the chimney breast completely inside and out.

All should have been fine as the aerial wasn’t connected to this. However, sometime later, when I decided to start recording programmes, I discovered that the signal was weak and kept breaking up. It’s likely that a workman knocked against the aerial by mistake. To rectify the problem I have purchased a gadget to ensure the aerial is pointed in exactly the right direction to receive everything I should.

This got me thinking about my own life, and Holy Spirit seeking to communicate with me the things of God. At the Fall our human spirit was deeply affected by sin and could no longer received what God was seeking to communicate (1 Corinthians 2:14). Through His death and resurrection Jesus re-established that communication link for all those who give their lives to Him. This is achieved by the Holy Spirit taking up residence in our human spirit (the part that communicates with God) so that our spiritual aerial is now retuned to God’s frequency. That’s wonderful news and I’ve sat comfortably with that knowledge for many years, thinking it was done, so no problem.

However, although God is seeking to communicate with us, our human spirit can, at times, be blind, deaf and dumb to what He is saying. The connection between me and God is still there and looks fine, but I have affected it (knocked it slightly out of alignment if you will). How do I do that? By not spending time in relationship with Him, not reading His word, delegating him towards the bottom of my “To do List.”

Then, the communication I receive from God is patchy at best and can be distorted due to the enemy static that gets in the way. I need to retune myself to His frequency. I can’t expect my wife or best friends to do it for me, not even my Pastor. I have to do it using my own will to determine to retune, because God is still seeking to communicate with me and hasn’t given up. Has this struck a chord with you? If so, maybe you would like to pray this prayer.

Prayer: Dear Lord. I recognise that I am not truly receiving from Your Holy Spirit as I used to. Either I’m hearing from You less and less, or the enemy static interference is getting in the way. I know it’s down to me and me alone to choose to do something about it. So today I determine to change and start to put You first. To reconnect in terms of my relationship with You and with Your word. I long to hear from You and I know You long for that for me too. Today I choose to make a conscious effort to retune my spirit to Yours. Amen.
