Every Knee will Bow

Turn to me and be saved, all ye ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other… Before me every knee will bow; by me every tongue will swear.
Isaiah 45:22-23, NIV

I read a report in the newspaper that an eminent scientist has written a book in which he concludes that the universe created itself because scientific laws such as gravity were in place. The newspaper said that he once appeared on television and said that you could call these laws ‘God’ if you liked but you couldn’t communicate with that ‘God’.

What a contrast to what I had just read in Isaiah Chapter 45 that morning! ‘It is I who made the earth and created mankind upon it. My own hands stretched out the heavens; I marshalled their starry hosts’ (Isaiah 45:12). And in verse 18 I read ‘For this is what the LORD says – he who created the heavens, he is God; he fashioned and made the earth, he founded it; he did not create it to be empty, but formed it to be inhabited – he says: ‘I am the LORD, and there is no other’.

God was imparting His living Word to Isaiah in the same way as He did with Moses (who then wrote the Book of Genesis). Each prophet who revealed more of God to His people would have a full knowledge of what God had said on all the previous occasions when He spoke to human beings. They knew He was a God who communicates and whom they could relate to. He is a personal God, who is ‘love’ and who cares passionately about relationships. In fact the Godhead is like a family or a community - Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Jesus came to make it completely clear about who God is and what He is like. And so the apostle Paul was able to expand even more on what Isaiah had been told about every knee bowing and every tongue swearing before God. The full and wonderful truth is now ‘that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father’ (Philippians 2:10-11).

How sad that one religion declares that God can’t have a son and that a scientist should declare that we can’t have a relationship with an impersonal scientific law (which he says is responsible for our very existence). The logical conclusion from his belief is that we shouldn’t experience any kind of emotions or suffering in this life, because - where could they have come from - a scientific law such as gravity?

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You for the life-giving truth in Your Word and the way You show Yourself to be a loving Father to us. Thank You that Jesus came to help us to know You and that the Holy Spirit remains with us now. Please unveil the eyes of those who think they have discovered a universe without Your love, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
