Beans On toast

by Rachael Corfield

Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

I love this passage in Ephesians - it paints a wonderful picture of how magnificent our God is; able to do exceedingly and abundantly more than we are even capable of thinking or imagining.

My husband and I had some time off work together recently and treated ourselves to lunch in one of our favourite places. The restaurant doubles as a greengrocer and delicatessen. The walls are lined with shelves stacked with exotic and exciting sauces, pickles and preserves from all over the world. In front of these are tables laden with fruit and vegetables of every kind, herbs and dried spices hang from the ceilings, there isn’t an inch of space to spare. Everything is beautifully arranged – it’s more like a display of great art works than a grocer’s shop!

In the centre of the shop are tables and chairs for the diners. You always have to queue but no-one minds because the atmosphere is buzzing with life and there’s so much to see. The food is delicious and full of variety using the wonderful ingredients all around. The menu is an extravaganza and just reading it is a pleasure.

As we sat enjoying our meal another party was seated at our table. These people were studying the menu too, but not with pleasure; they were focussed on what was not included. When the waitress came to take their order they asked, “Do you do beans on toast?” with barely a flicker she replied, “We can, if that’s what you want.” “Yes, 3 beans on toast with tea please.”

For a moment I was stunned. There is nothing wrong with beans on toast or tea, but when a feast is on offer how sad to opt for something so much less!

Our Heavenly Father invites us to a feast He’s prepared for us, David declared in Psalm 23 ‘You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies’, and we get a glimpse of the wonders of love and redemption He has for us in The Song of Solomon ‘He has taken me to the banquet hall, and his banner over me is love.’ Our loving God has so much to give us but I wonder whether we sometimes limit Him to the equivalent of ‘beans on toast’ when He’s offering ‘exceedingly abundantly’ above our lowly thinking!

Prayer: Thank You Father that You’re a generous God who loves to give good things to Your children and to work wonderfully in our lives. Please help me to be open to the fullness of all You want to do and give to me, and no limit You. Thank You for sending Jesus to be my Saviour and Redeemer, the greatest gift of all. Amen.
