Rock of Safety

by Pam Smith

For wherever I am, though far away at the ends of the earth, I will cry to you for help. When my heart is faint and overwhelmed, lead me to the mighty, towering Rock of safety.
Psalm 61:2, LB

Many of us have experienced ‘overwhelm’. My dictionary says to ‘overwhelm’ means to ‘crash out’, ‘submerge’, or to ‘engulf’. My computer gets overwhelmed sometimes, when I overload it with too many instructions and it just closes down.

As children of the Father, although we may get engulfed, or become overwhelmed, by something or someone and may even crash at some stage, we do have a positive way that is open for us to take. We don’t have to ‘close down’, but we can ‘open up’ to the Father.
‘I will cry to you for help’, says Psalm 38:10.

'Save me Lord’, Peter cried, as he began to sink. At those words - instantly, Jesus reached out his hand and rescued him (Matthew 14:30). Some of us don’t call out to the Lord until we’re desperate. We don’t realise that He waits to hear the cry of our heart, and He’s there.

One of my favourite scriptures says ‘My power shows up best in weak people’. Jesus says ‘I am with you, that is all you need’. Paul says ‘When I am weak then I am strong – the less I have, the more I depend on Him’.

To the world these things are completely illogical but to God’s children they are life and truth. God sends his Holy Spirit, the Comforter and Sustainer into our human frailty and lifts us above what’s going on around us, to a different dimension of His glorious power and love. He gives power to the tired and worn out, and strength to the weak. To anyone who has experienced this, it’s not just ‘nice words’, but a tangible reality. ‘The Eternal God is your Refuge and underneath are the everlasting arms’. He is ‘the mighty, towering Rock of safety’.

He hideth my soul in the cleft of the Rock,
That shadows a dry, thirsty land.
He hideth my soul in the depths of his love,
And covers me there, with his hand.
. Fanny Crosby

Prayer: Lord, Please help those who are overwhelmed in their lives today, to cry out to You. Lead me to the Rock that is higher than I. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
