Seeds of the Kingdom

Needing a Saviour

by Cath Taylor

From the ends of the earth, I will cry out to you for help, for my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the towering rock of safety for you are my safe refuge.

If I could live anywhere in the world, I could narrow it down to a few countries but one definite would have to be a house overlooking the ocean. From since I can remember I have always loved the beach… the smell of the salt air and the sound of the waves. To me this is one of the best things God created!

When I was younger every year we would go for various holidays/vacations to the seaside! One Spring we went to a beach in the north east of England called Scarborough. That particular April there were huge storms and I can remember standing high on the cliff overlooking the ocean watching as huge waves engulfed cars and dragged them out to sea! It was quite literally overwhelming!

There have been times in my life that I have felt overwhelmed. I imagine most of us have. Whatever the overwhelm may be – whether it is our emotions, realities of life, stress or the pull of the enemy – it is a horrible place to be. It feels quite like those cars engulfed by something so powerful that it seems impossible to find a solid place.

I love this verse because I love the reality of where David is at. He’s not ashamed of his weakness or his need, thinking it ungodly and wrong, he simply cries out to the Lord to save Him and lead Him to the safe place that is our Father God. This towering rock of safety where true peace and calm reside, is out of reach of the engulfing waves of overwhelm, and not attainable to visit by our own strength or cleverness.

Whether today you feel overwhelmed or not, we all still need a Saviour. We all need to know what it is to reach out for Him and acknowledge we can’t do it alone. There is something deeply significant in the way David uses the phrase “lead me”. So often we expect God to come and pick us up and do all the work for us. How opposite I have found this to be, in my own personal walk with the Lord. Even in the overwhelm, once we have acknowledged our need for Him, we still have to put one foot in front of the other and chose to allow Him to lead us to the place of peace.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for Your cross. Thank You for making it possible for me to shelter in the towering rock of safety that is my Father God, even though I don’t deserve it. Thank You, Father God, for the refuge You offer me even when I am overwhelmed and have been trying to fix it all myself. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
