Walking Through The Fog

Where can we run to when there’s nowhere to run? Who can we depend on when there’s no-one we can trust? Where can we find guidance when we don’t know which way to go?

When we’re alone and bewildered, weary and fearful, uncertainty leads to doubt and nothing is secure. Pressure of circumstances bear down upon us. Darkness closes in. We can’t see beyond our problems. We try to reach out to God, but He seems so far away.

The enemy, the father of lies, sows seeds of doubt and confusion into our minds. Jesus said ‘I am with you always’ (Matthew 28:20). Is this for me, or was this Jesus just speaking to His disciples? God said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you’ (Hebrews 13 5). But sometimes we’re unable to see Him through the fog.

Three times the apostle Paul pleaded with God to take away the thorn in his flesh. Although we’re not told what it was, he was convinced it was from Satan, tormenting him. But God said, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness’ (2 Corinthians 12: 9).

The grace of God is in His free and unconditional love and mercy towards us, whatever our circumstances. It covers all guilt, shame and fear as we rest in His sufficiency. We no longer have to carry this heavy burden. We can, with confidence, walk through the fog of uncertainty into His presence, and, in our weakness, rest in the strength of His love.

Are we looking to man’s way of solving our problems, measuring everything from a human perspective? Are we carrying ‘the cares of this world ... (which) choke the word, making it unfruitful’ (Mark 4:19)?

If we’re looking beyond God for a way out of a difficult situation, we’re looking in the wrong direction. Where is our dependency - in man, or in God? God has to be central in every aspect of our life and allowed access to all our decisions. ‘Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind’ (Romans 12:2).

Jesus said, ‘I am the way’ (John 14:6). In whatever situation we find ourselves, He is the way - the only way, not just in times of need, but continually. With Christ within us and our faith turned towards Him, He’ll lead us through the fog and back into the light.

Prayer: Lord, sometimes I don’t know which way to turn. Please help me to live and walk in the light of Your presence, so that I don’t need to search for You, but know You’re always with me, living within me, by the power of Your spirit. Then I don’t have to look for You in times of trouble, because You’re always there. Thank You, in the name of Jesus. Amen.
