Who Am I and What Am I Like?

Then God said, ‘let us make man in our own image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
Genesis 1:26-27, NIV

God has a perfect self image. In Exodus 3:14 we read that the Lord God said ‘I am who I am.’ We’re made in His image. He’s made us to be like Him. As we get to know Him more, we get to know ourselves more. He’s in us and we’re one with Him. What we think and believe about ourselves should improve as we become more like Him and as we’re continually being changed into His likeness.

Jesus had such a perfect self image also. He had the assurance of one who was not concerned about what other people thought of Him, nor who they thought He was. Jesus knew ‘I am who I am’. Whatever other people thought was not going to change His identity nor make any Him different.

I used to pray ‘Lord, I give myself to you this day’ and ‘Lord, I lay my life before you today in full submission,’ but I was denying myself in my enthusiasm to honour the Lord God and for Him to have His way in my life. When I learnt that He’d made me in his image, I started to change the way I prayed. I began to say ‘Thank you for making me, me, Lord. Thank you for the attributes you have given me - my personality, my character, my creativity, my intelligence, my looks, my humour, my capabilities, my emotions and my physical appearance.'

It’s amazing that we are all so totally unique and individual. I began proclaiming His Truth, what He says about me in his word, over myself. As I did so I was breaking the power of deception and falsehood and beginning to repair damage caused by the wrong ideas I had about my self image.

What does God say about me? He says I’ve been ‘delivered from the dominion of darkness into the Kingdom of His son’ (Col 1:13); that ‘He chose me before the creation of the world’ (Eph 1:4); and that I’ve ‘been called according to His purpose’ (Rom 8:28). God says many more things about me and about who He made me to be and how He loves me the way I am.

Prayer: Thank you Lord that as I proclaim the truth about who you are and recognise that man was made in the image and likeness of God, that I will become more like you. Thank you for loving me as I am, and that you want me to enjoy fellowship with you in your Kingdom. In Jesus' name, Amen.
