Leaning on God

by Lindsey Hanekom

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
Proverbs 3:5-6, NIV

I am intrigued by the current ‘race’ between the EU and the US to find the so called ‘God Particle’, the origin of matter. Although the science surrounding ‘super-conducting super colliders’ and ‘particle physics’ is beyond my comprehension, I understand that scientists are searching for answers. They’re trying to find out why we are here, how we are here and where it all started. As Christians we know that science alone can’t find the answer to these questions, yet the search goes on.

We’re uncomfortable with not knowing. We want to know and understand. This makes us feel secure. Yet, mankind’s knowledge and understanding is limited and fallible; not just understanding the world we live in, but understanding our own lives and the circumstances we may find ourselves in.

Scripture tells us not to lean on our own understanding. When you lean on something you relax and recline, putting all your weight against it as it supports you. If what you’re leaning on falls down, breaks or weakens then you easily fall over.

Leaning on our own understanding is an insecure place. Leaning on our limited knowledge leads us to live in a constant state of tension. We’re not able to fully recline and relax. The one thing we do know is - that we don’t know everything.

Leaning on God’s understanding and seeking Him leaves us secure and free. We’re unlimited in what we can achieve through God (in Him all things are possible). Our foundation is trust in what He knows - and that has no limits.

Our security must be our faith in Him, knowing that He has the answers but that He also isthe Answer. He’s the Beginning and the End, the source and origin of all things. We need to lean on Him. We need to recline, relax and enjoy the freedom of not having to have all the answers ourselves and simply trust the One who is the Answer.

Prayer: Thank You, Father God, that You’re the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. You’re the origin of all things and you’re the only one I can totally trust. Help me not to lean on my own understanding but trust You in all things. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
