Father`s Care

by Malcolm Wood

‘….Your father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him!’
Matthew 6:8, NLT

It is now over thirty years since we held our third son as a baby in our arms and wondered at the marvel and miracle of new life. At that time we once again started the process, as we had with our previous two sons, of protecting, caring and providing for this vulnerable little person whom God had entrusted to us. What an awesome responsibility!

These thoughts were rekindled on the arrival of our little granddaughter a few weeks ago. We have watched and prayed as our eldest son and daughter in law have assumed the mantle of parenthood. It has struck us afresh how dependant a new born baby is upon its parents for everything - comfort, shelter, safety, food, clothing, bathing, etc.

As God`s children living in this sophisticated world, are we perhaps being conditioned to be more independent than we should be? Man has achieved so much which sadly has resulted in the widely accepted belief that we have no need for God. We are surrounded by an increasing number of examples of man’s prowess, self reliance, and ability, all of which are used to try to persuade us to look to man rather than God for the answer to all the worlds problems.
The truth is that in these days of turmoil, uncertainty and fear we need to be looking more to God for the answers rather than to man. Our Father God, like any loving, caring parent, knows all the details of our life and knows exactly what we need even better than we do ourselves. So often we take things into our own hands and work out our own solutions rather than being totally reliant on Him. Children have no option other than to look to their parents. Should we not be the same with our Father God?

‘Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom, fear the Lord and turn your back on evil. Then you will gain renewed health and vitality’ Proverbs 3:7-8 (NLT).

Prayer: Father God I am sorry for so often ‘doing my own thing’ rather than looking to you for the answer to all my needs. Please forgive me and help me to trust you more. Amen.
