Do Something!

They answered, Come on, let's attack them! We have seen that the land is very good. Aren't you going to do something? Don't hesitate to go there and take it over.
Judges 18:9, NIV

There’s an air of excitement alongside a sense of mild panic in our house at the moment as we’re preparing to go on our annual holiday. With only three days to go before we leave, there seems to be an unending amount of things to accomplish.

And so I have written ‘the holiday list’ where I considered all that needs to be done, how it should be achieved, the order it needs to be done in and who should do each task. As I consider the list I find my thoughts drifting to all the wonderful things that we can do when we arrive on our holiday; which is infinitely nicer to consider than the jobs that need doing.

Yet, with all the thought and discussion that has taken place with my husband about the holiday, one fact remains: nothing has been done! All we have is a ticket for the ferry we will be boarding in three days time.

The situation reminds me of how we can be with our personal healing needs. We can look at each need and consider it, even in the fine details. We can have lists of things we want God to ‘fix’ and even have our own version of a timescale and how such healing will be achieved. We can read books about our issues, talk to others about them, think about how life will be once we have got there but we never actually do anything that will move us forward.

We can read books, attend courses, study our issues in depth but without actually doing something pro-active, we will never find the freedom that healing brings.

Although I dislike washing, packing, and clearing out the fridge, that’s what will make our holiday happen. Equally, I dislike looking at the hard issues in my life. I dislike battling with forgiving someone who’s hurt me or continues to hurt me. I dislike being told that I’ve done something wrong or something needs to change in my life. Yet it’s often doing the things we dislike that will make our healing happen.

We all want to take ground from the enemy in our lives and, as this verse reminds us, there’s a question that we should all be asking ourselves, ‘Aren’t you going to do something?’

If you don’t know what to do then ask God to show you, but be willing to do it, whatever it is. This is the pathway to freedom and healing.

Prayer: Father God, help me move forward in my life. Help me look at the real issues and deal with them, with You beside me. I want to move forward and I will do whatever it takes. Amen.
