Carried on Eagle’s Wings

by Margaret Silvester

Like an eagle that stirs up its nest and hovers over its young, that spreads its wings to catch them and carries them on its pinions, the Lord alone led him; no foreign god was with him.
Deuteronomy 32:11-12, NIV

As the plane was beginning to descend I thought I would love to see two things during our August holiday in the Swiss Mountains. One was snow and the other was a wonder of nature. I received both of my desires.

For the first two days it rained incessantly, and when we awoke on the third day the mountain range was covered in thick snow – quite a turn in the August weather. The next day we were tramping through the snow high in the mountains when we heard screeching overhead and to our amazement we watched an eagle teaching its young to fly. The two chicks looked so tiny and seemed to be terrified. Repeatedly they came to rest on their mother’s wing only to be tossed up into the air to fend for themselves again. The eagle literally hovered over its young, and when distress reached a high pitch, the eagle went along side, caught the chicks on her wings and soared with them back to the safety of the eerie.

The parent eagle, in teaching her young to fly, protects them and encourages them to imitate her own movements. Despite their protests she is always there to protect and save them from danger. If the young eagles are not pushed out of the eerie they will never learn to fly.

Our text today sets an aspect of God in the image of the eagle teaching its chicks to fly. In order for our character to develop He sometimes asks us to leave our comfort zones and move into unknown, and possibly precarious places, with Him leading us, guiding us, protecting and hovering over us. In unknown experiences we learn to depend more fully upon God, proving in a new way His faithfulness and care for us.

Things happen in our lives that we sometimes do not welcome. It’s easy to be like the eaglet, making a fuss and constantly wanting to go back to the safety of the nest. God’s desire for all His children is that they grow into Christian maturity. Christian maturity is growing more fully into the likeness of Jesus.

Do you need to be willing to leave your comfort zone and trust God to carry you on eagle’s wings as you step out into some unknown purpose that He has planned for you?

Prayer: Father, thank You that in faithfulness and love You have plans for me. Thank You for Your trustworthy character. Today I choose to trust You and follow Your ways, so that I can grow in Christian maturity and in the image of Your Son. Amen.
