Are You Wearing the Right Glasses?

by Dianne Jones

The law of the Lord is perfect (flawless), restoring and refreshing the soul; The statutes of the Lord are reliable and trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, bringing joy to the heart; The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.
Psalm 19:7-8, Amplified version

Last year I attended a wedding. As I sat in church reading the wedding service, I thought that the text seemed a bit blurred. When the service began, several other details seemed blurred too. Having had acute eye problems before, I got panicky in case this was happening again. It was only after the service, when I took my glasses off and inspected them, that I realised what I had done. After putting on my makeup at home, I had accidentally picked up quite an old pair of glasses that were lying near my makeup.

Recently, God reminded me of this incident as I was meditating on the importance of clear vision in our current situation. It seems that each day we are exposed to shocking statistics and scenes on the TV or internet, worse case scenarios, speculations, and unclear guidelines. No wonder we can become confused, fearful, and anxious! Our spiritual vision can also become blurred.

Governments and experts in various fields might seem to be struggling to know what the best course of action is, as the coronavirus restrictions are gradually eased, but our God is not confused. He is always in control of our lives,as we make Him Lord, even if there is an ever-changing situation in this world. Two words have kept coming to me recently, focus and realignment.

We need to focus on our Lord, the God of covenant love and faithfulness to His people and dig deep into His Word, because His word is perfect, unchanging, and true. As Psalm 19:7-8 also says, His word is pure and untainted by sin. As we meditate on God’s word with a heart to obey all that He tells us, these verses promise that His word will bring inner restoration, refreshment, and joy, and give us wisdom and direction.

As Psalm 119:105 says, ‘Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path’. What a relief and joy that we can stand firm, solidly anchored in God’s word in this time of uncertainty! Perhaps We need to realign our understanding and vision for the way ahead to ensure we are in line with God’s word.

Prayer: Lord, I want to be firmly anchored in Your word and not tossed around by the uncertainties in my life and the world. ‘Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Saviour, and my hope is in you all day long’ (Psalm 25:4-5, NIV). Amen.
