An Open Door

by Pam Smith

I am the door; if anyone enters by me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.
John 10.9, RSV

In this life there’s an open door. It’s an appointment to hear and respond to the Gospel. It appears to us at certain times, and we can respond, or ignore it. We don’t know when it will come, or how often the opportunity will occur, but sometimes the call is very strong and very close, and we are, as it were, on the doorstep. It may be the only chance we have to go through that door.

Jesus says, ‘I am the door’. Maybe there’ll come a time when Jesus appears to you, and calls you by name to turn from the path you’re going down, and to go through the door which is now open to you. I pray it may be a clear call to you.

When you choose to go through that door it leads to freedom, healing, restoration, security, and a real change in your life. Something completely new takes place inside you. You’ll find a new love, born from the Spirit, filling you, springing up, and reaching out with a fresh vision and destiny.

When we go through that door we’re still ‘in the world’ but not ‘of the world’; which means that the spirit part of our being has been made alive by His Spirit, and becomes one with Him. With God we’ll experience more than just the dimensions and senses of this world. This was what the Creator intended for us at the beginning of creation. God meant us to enjoy the whole of our being, both physical and spiritual. He made us in His image. There’s a beauty in our spirit being made alive, which can have a great effect on our physical being. We were meant to be ‘supernatural’, for we are spirit, soul and body.

The door we choose to go through is one of restoration. Christ, who is the door, will restore us into life as it was first intended, in a loving relationship with God the Father. There’s no other door to Him. Many of us have been through this door, and we’re experiencing the dimension of living in the Spirit, but we have to bend low to get through the door. We used to sing a children’s chorus about this:

‘There’s a way back to God from the dark paths of sin. There’s a door that is open and all may go in. At Calvary’s cross is where you begin, When you come as a sinner to Jesus’.

Prayer: Lord, thank You that there’s a door, open to every one of us. As we come across this door may we recognise the wonderful opportunity You’ve opened for us. Amen.
