We’re on a Journey, Enjoy the Ride!

by Diane Watson

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
Proverbs 3:5-6, NIV

I was watching the movie Shrek 2 with my granddaughter, Ava. Shrek, the ogre, his wife Princess Fiona and Donkey were travelling to visit Fiona’s parents, the king and queen of ‘Far, Far Away Land’. On the journey Donkey keeps asking “Are we there yet?” Shrek answers that it is far, far away, and is quite annoyed with Donkey. It made me contemplate our own walk and spiritual journey with the Lord.

We often are so focussed about reaching the destination that we fail to take in all that’s happening on the journey. We keep asking the Lord “Are we there yet?” The journey’s part of our life and just as important as the destination. We can often think, “Well when this hurdle is over then I can relax”, instead of asking the Lord, “what is the lesson in the journey?” Can we truly trust God to get us through?

In the movie Shrek 2, when they finally did get to their destination in ‘Far, Far Away land’, that is when all hell broke loose. We need to thank God for every step of our journey and learn to lean into God and trust Him to take us by the hand through it. There will be ups and downs, good times and bad, but it’s all worth it. God is refining us. He wants the pure gold in us to shine, but sometimes He has to turn up the heat to bring the dross to the surface. Yes, it’s painful, but afterwards we shine!

Prayer: Heavenly Father thank You that You promise that You will never leave us nor forsake us. As we are on the journey of life help us to trust You and allow You to lead us and guide us instead of wanting the journey to hurry up and end. Thank You, Father, that You care enough about us to want us to shine for You through all circumstances. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
