The Half Has Never Been Told

But I did not believe these things until I came and saw with my own eyes. Indeed, not even half was told me; in wisdom and wealth you have far exceeded the report I heard.
1 Kings 10:7, NIV

We had read about it, heard about it, seen pictures of it, but nothing really captured the reality of being there ourselves and experiencing firsthand the sights and sounds of the vast country of Canada. Our recent, first time visit, made possible through the kindness of friends and family, enabled us to marvel afresh at the vastness of God’s creation. The power of the Niagara Falls, to the majesty of the Rocky Mountains, with the huge open spaces of the prairies in between, all declared the glory of God. As we travelled from one location to the next, as one awe-inspiring vista merged into the next, we could say with the Queen of Sheba of old ‘the half has not been told us’ (text above).

It’s true in so many areas of life, be it pain, discomfort, loneliness, fear, or, on the other hand, anticipation, joy, exhilaration, satisfaction, unless experienced ourselves, it’s difficult to fully understand or empathise with others in that position.

So it is with our walk with the Lord. We can read numerous books and study endlessly, listen to sermon after sermon, hear testimonies galore, as others share what it means to be a Christian, and what having a personal relationship with Jesus means to them, but not until we take that decisive step and discover for ourselves what it truly means to be a member of God’s family, do we really appreciate what it’s all about.

As we daily continue our Christian walk in the kingdom of God, with Jesus by His Spirit as our guide, may our eyes, ears, hearts and minds be open to what He wants us to explore, experience and enjoy on this adventure of faith which we call life. As we discover more, and learn more of what being a child of God is all about, we will have many reasons to declare “the half has never been told!”

I feel sure that when we reach the end of our journey here on earth and reach our final destination in heaven, whatever we have read about it, whatever we have learnt about it, whatever picture we have of heaven, we shall all have reason to declare afresh “the half has never been told!”

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You for enabling me to become a member of Your family. Please help me to recognise and appreciate more and more all the many blessings You’ve made available for me. Amen.
