The Body of Christ

Every other week during the winter a lunchtime concert is given in a nearby town, and I go as often as possible as I enjoy listening to classical music. We are privileged to have talented musicians come to play for us, either as soloists, or trios, quartets, and, sometimes, quintets.

One of the things that fascinates me is the skill with which the musicians blend together, watching each other and listening for their cue. Occasionally one of them will have to wait for a few bars but he or she is always ready to come in exactly on time and if they forgot, the harmony of the piece would be spoilt. I know from my own limited experience of singing in a choir what an amount of work goes into such performances and the hours of practice that each player would put in on their own, even before they join the rest of their group, but the result is wonderful harmony and a joy to listen to.

This is how the body of Christ should be, each of us working together in harmony. The hours of practice that a musician puts in could be equated to the time that we, as individuals, should spend in prayer, before coming together as the Body to pray together and be ready to serve one another and the world around us.

Paul wrote about the importance of each individual in the Body and that it would not be complete without all the parts working and sharing together equally. Some people may not have a very prominent part to play, and others may feel that they are unimportant, but nobody should be overlooked or belittled as each one is precious to Jesus, and in His eyes, equally important.

Prayer: Father God, Thank You that You have placed me in the Body of Christ. There are times when I don’t feel very much a part of it, or that I am not doing all that I could, but You understand and will make a way for me. Please help me to understand that I am precious in Your eyes. Amen.
