House on the Rock

“All who listen to my instructions and follow them are wise, like a man who builds his house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents, and the floods rise, and the storm winds beat against his house, it won’t collapse, for it is built on rock.”
Matthew 7:24-25, LB

Recently I was watching my young granddaughter intently building a house from a pack of playing cards. Again and again she got to the ‘third floor’ and they would all collapse, she would not give up, but tried again and again. There was no firm foundation beneath them and nothing to stick them together and even a slight sigh would blow them down again.

This could well be like someone’s life. One who has no foundation of love or security to build on as they grow up; no one to help them stand up and become strong in relationships with others; no one to build into their lives the wholeness and confidence that would under gird them for living in this world. Jesus has great compassion for such lives as these. Sometimes it is through no fault of their own, sometimes through ignorance and sometimes because they have rejected Christ the Living Stone, chosen by God. (1 Peter 2.4).

When we respond to the words of Jesus and make Him our Foundation stone on which to build our lives, we will become strong and secure, able to build one another up in love and to stand through the storms of life. Paul says, We who believe are carefully joined together with Christ as parts of a beautiful constantly growing temple for God and you also are joined with him and with each other by the Spirit and are part of this dwelling place of God. Ephesians 2.21,22. LB

What a wonderful provision God has made for us. Jesus is our Cornerstone and we can always lean on His strength and know he is our Rock throughout our lives. "For no other foundation can anyone lay, than that which is laid, which is Christ Jesus." 1 Corinthians 3.11.

"You are my Rock in times of trouble,
You lift me up when I fall down,
All through the storm your love is the anchor,
My hope is in You alone."
Brian Doerkson

Prayer: Dear Lord, We thank you that we have a firm foundation in you. May we always build our lives on your words of truth. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
