A New Identity
by David Cross
I had the opportunity recently to teach on the topic of inner healing. Many people have experienced painful wounding in the course of their lives and I passionately believe that God has the desire and ability to comfort and restore us from the hurts of the past, when we seek Him with an open heart. During the weekend of teaching we looked at the depth of restoration needed in order for us to move into a place of true healing.
When we receive Jesus as the Saviour of our lives we are also given a new foundational identity. However the choice to walk in this new identity remains with us. God reminds us in this verse today (Isaiah 54:11) that this means letting Him rebuild our lives in the deepest places of the human heart.
We could summarise this choice, of which identity to walk in, as follows: ‘I am a hurting person destined to live in the broken-ness of my past’, (how the enemy wants me to remain trapped), or ‘I am a covenant child of God being made whole and walking into my true destiny’, (how God wants me to move forward).
Renouncing the old identity and declaring the new can be a powerful step in agreeing with God for the process He wants in bringing healing into our lives. This new identity is not necessarily how we yet feel, but it is how God now sees us. Try declaring it today!
Prayer: Father, thank You for the amazing work that You are able and wanting to do in the deepest places of my life. I choose to agree with Your description of my true identity. Amen.
