We want to see Jesus
by Margaret Silvester
Some Greeks who had come to Jerusalem to attend the Passover paid a visit to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee. They said, “Sir, we want to meet Jesus.” Philip told Andrew about it, and they went together to ask Jesus.
On Easter Sunday morning I had the privilege of worshipping with several hundred other people. It was a wonderful time of joy and celebration as songs of worship and praise to Jesus rang out with the sure and certain knowledge that He is alive.
On the first Easter Day Mary Magdalene arrived at the empty tomb. She thought the body of Jesus had been stolen. She was in despair until she met the risen Jesus. Overwhelmed with joy, she found the disciples and told them the good news; “I have seen the Lord.” The recipients of the good news were “Mourning and weeping and they did not believe her.”
In the evening of Easter Day Jesus appeared to His disciples who were locked in a room for fear of the Jews. The risen Jesus appeared to them but Thomas was missing. When they later told Thomas the good news, he didn’t believe it. He needed to see for himself in order to believe.
We all need to see Jesus for ourselves. To see Jesus is not simply to know what He’s done for us – that knowledge brings us to salvation. To see Jesus is to really grasp the wonder of who He is. This brings a deep response in the human heart to know Him more, to love Him better and to serve Him more worthily.
Like the first disciples, our vision of Jesus can be blurred. Despair, sorrow or fear can stand in the way of us seeing Him clearly.
To see Jesus is to worship Him, and He alone is worthy of our worship.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, I want to see You more clearly today. Thank You that You’re alive and You’re with me. Whatever comes into my life today please help me to fix my eyes on You, knowing that the power which raised You from the dead is available to me, because I believe in You. Amen.
